Savoy Ballroom

  • opened in 1926
  • also known as:
 “Home of the Happy Feet”
 or “the Track”
    • floor had to be replaced every three years
  • as opposed to other clubs (e.g. Cotton Club, et al.) it was integrated
  • Chick Webb’s band was the house band starting in 1931
    • Ella Fitzgerald
    • Chick Webb and His Orchestra – “Stompin’ At The Savoy”
  • eventually had two bandstands
    • provided a venue for battles of the bands
  • closed in 1958
    • torn down, along with the Cotton Club, and to make room for a housing project
