Standards and Individualism

  • The concept of a Jazz standard is important in the tradition of Jazz
  • A standard is any popular piece that is widely known and performed
  • Often used by musicians to show their particular perspective on the standard, or to demonstrate their ability to perform the standard
  • Some of the most popular jazz standards are:
    • W.C. Handy – “St. Louis Blues”
    • Hoagy Carmichael – “Stardust”
    • Johnny Green – “Body & Soul”
    • Thelonious Monk – “‘Round Midnight”
