Evolution of Jazz

  • Jazz is an evolution, not necessarily a progression of a single style
    • sometimes, there are dead ends
    • often there are many branches and they descend from many sources
  • Many Jazz styles run parallel, and is not uncommon for a single performer to play in many different styles:
    • Miles Davis
  • Some performers play the same style throughout their career, yet remain important and/or influential:
    • Louis Armstrong
